Children’s and Teens’ Programming Coordinator

The Thornton Public Library is looking for an energetic Children’s Librarian to join the library’s staff. The successful candidate will have a love of children and children’s programming and be a team player. Thornton Public Library has a successful in-library story time program and hosts a variety of events and programs.

The Thornton Public Library is accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Children’s and Teen’s Programming Coordinator. The purpose of this position is to provide information, reference, and programming to children and young adult patrons. The Children’s and Teen’s Programming Coordinator works under the supervision of the Library Director.

Examples of Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Plans, organizes, and implements age-appropriate youth programming, materials selection, reference services, equipment, and circulation.
  2. Selects materials and equipment for youth services.
  3. Plans and implements the library’s popular Summer Reading Program.
  4. Prepares publicity for library youth services. 
  5. Assists children and young adult patrons in locating and using library resources in person and by telephone. Determines patron information needs. Processes patron requests for materials from local collection and interlibrary loans. 
  6. Develops relationships with community schools to plan collaborative and complementary programs in order to maximize student interest and access to library resources.
  7. Teaches children and young adult patrons to use online computer catalogs, online databases, and the Internet. Instructs patrons in the use of computers to locate materials.
  8. Performs Reference Desk duties, answering patron questions, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and assisting with technology.
  9. Perform Circulation duties, checking in and out materials for patrons, creating library cards, handling patrons, processing holds, etc…

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalency
  2. Solid experience/familiarity with youth services programming, interests, and trends, including Internet, social media, and apps.
  3. Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Prior experience with library public service, popular materials, and children’s programming preferred.
  5. Basic computer skills and comfort with learning new technology

12 hours per week. $15.00 per hr.
